On Location: Film in the Foothills

In 1906 a “moving picture” – a “Friscoscope” of the San Francisco earthquake was shown at the Victoria Opera House in High River. In 1919, “moving picture operators” arrived in High River to film Edward Prince of Wales on his cross-Canada tour stop.

This set off a long series of events that became interwoven with the history of the Foothills and Southern Alberta. From the 1926 western “Chip of the Flying U” to “Superman” to “Heartland”, the spectacular and varied scenery of this area has provided a backdrop for more than 160 movies and television series. Grab your popcorn and take in this “moving” exhibit.
