"Don't"

There is a wonderful little book (2.5” x 3.5”) titled “Don’t” in the museum archives. Copyright 1883. The preface begins: “It so happens that most of the rules of society are prohibitory in character. This face suggested the negative form adopted in this little book, and permitted the various injunctions to be expressed in a contentious and emphatic manner... .” There are chapters on: “At Table”, “Dress and Personal Habits”, “In the Drawing Room”, In Speech”, “In General” and a special chapter for the ladies only entitled “For Womankind”.

These pages are from the chapter “In Public”.
